There’s no doubt that we do need communication in our lives, we are social creature, we need interaction with others. We do business with communication, and communication also reflect our social status. The more communicative and honorable persons are, could be able to be segmented by their social status.

A number of efforts to try systemized main functions of mass communication, which was originally begun by Lasswell (1948) which gives a summary / conclusion about the basic functions of communication as follows: control environment; relationship (correlation) parts of the community in responding to the environment; transmission of cultural heritage . Function of social control refers to efforts to spread information and objective interpretation of the events occurring within and outside the social environment with the aim of social control in order to avoid the things that are not desirable. Social correlation function refers to efforts to provide interpretation and information linking a social group with other social groups or between one view with another view with the aim of reaching consensus. The function of socialization refers to the efforts of inheritance of values from one generation to another, or from one group to another.

Charles Robert Wright (1960) adds entertainment functions in mass communication. Jay Black and Frederick C., Whitney (1988) defines functions of mass communication:
(a) to inform,
(b) to entertain,
(c) to persuade, and
(d) transmission of the culture.

Some definitions of “advanced” mass communication functions mentioned above are expressly although different, but in fact have in common and complementary definitions of Lasswell function of mass communication, along with the development of products (messages) that was delivered by the mass media itself.

Beside that, communication are taking important roles in organization. Without communication, organization doesn’t exists. The importance of communication have been applied and practice by lots of people, one of them is Lillian Glass, she took advantages of communication by coaching lots of people including movie stars and popular singers to increase their level of communication. Communication does reflect your social status, so pick your word carefully.

Know the indicators of physical and sexual abuse.
The statistics of child abuse are startling and saddening. Sometimes a child’s only defenses are the friends, family and members of his or her community. Awareness of signs of abuse is crucial to save victimized children from a life of trauma, or even death.

The CAPTA definition reads: “at a minimum, any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.”

Types of Child Abuse
With the above definition as a foundation, individual states are responsible for their own definitions of abuse and neglect, falling into one or more of four general categories: Neglect, Physical, Sexual, and Emotional abuse. Below, a brief look at basic characteristics of each category.

Neglect: Failure to provide for a child’s basic needs to allow for proper physical, emotional, and mental growth and development. Lack of proper nourishment, education, safety, clothing, shelter and/or medical care.

Physical: Intentional harm caused to a child’s person by any form of physical assault regardless of intent. Lack of provision of medical care for injured or ill child.

Sexual: Any activity on a child such as fondling of genitals, penetration, incest, rape, sodomy, indecent exposure, and exploitation via pornographic materials and/or prostitution.

Emotional: Psychological damage inflicted on a child by way of threats, insults, extreme punishment, fear, rejection, and isolation, ignoring, or any act or word which hinders positive mental, social, and emotional development.

Recognizing the Signs
Maltreatment can take on any form or combination, including, but not limited to, those listed above. It is important that caregivers, educators, and community members be aware of what to look for when maltreatment is suspected.

Cases must always be considered on an individual basis, with regard to the specifics of the situation. No two abuse patterns are exactly alike and no list of consequential behaviors is ever exhaustive. A single sign may not be indicative of abuse. However, patterns, consistencies or a combination of signs merit a closer look. The following traits are commonly seen in children suffering a type of abuse or neglect:

Physical
•	Recurrent bruising, injuries, burns.
•	Injuries in the shape of an object (belt buckle, etc).
•	Infections indicating delay or neglect of treatment.
•	Injuries may be in various stages of healing.
•	Lack of hygiene and grooming.
•	Soiled clothes, lack of appropriate seasonal wear.

Behavioral
•	Sudden change in behavior or school performance.
•	Overly compliant, passive, timid, withdrawn.
•	Delays going home from school or functions.
•	Excuses for injuries that do not seem consistent or believable.
•	Frequent absences from or lateness to school.
•	Difficulty concentrating, depression.
•	Self-destructive/self-abusive behavior.

Sexual Abuse
Signs may be specific to sexual abuse.
•	Difficulty sitting or walking.
•	Bloodied underwear.
•	Genital bruising/tearing.
•	Knowledge of a sexual nature inconsistent with age.
•	An older child behaving like a younger child (such as bed-wetting or thumb sucking)
•	Has new words for private body parts.
•	Resists removing clothes when appropriate times (bath, bed, toileting, diapering).
•	Asks other children to behave sexually or play sexual games.
•	Mimics adult-like sexual behaviors with toys or stuffed animal.
•	Wetting and soiling accidents unrelated to toilet training.

Reporting Child Abuse
If you suspect or know a child is being abused, notify a social worker, your local police department.

What happens to a city neighborhood when houses are torn down and absentee landlords leave behind abandoned lots? In a dense urban neighborhood of row houses, it creates an eyesore, is a hazard for residents, and dramatically reduces property values.

Finding Lots for Vacant Lot Project
In 2009, after having success creating the Youth Organics Garden in an unused open field at the Creighton Story Housing Project, the Director of Grand Street Community Arts, Tom McPheeters, approached the city about vacant lots in the Mansion Neighborhood and adjoining South End Neighborhood.

Properties were researched to determine ownership and the master plan for the South End revitalization was studied by volunteer Rebecca Platel, who has a background in community organizing and planning. It was found that a number of the vacant lots were now taken over by the city and available.

Employing Teens from City Summer Work Program
The city of Albany Youth Employment Program (YEP) hires, pays, and assigns teens to work at various not-for-profit organizations or at city sites during the summer vacation.

Four teens from YEP were assigned to Grand Street Community Arts to work on the Vacant Lot Project with three volunteers – a community organizer and planner; an architect and University at Albany MFA student; and an artist/educator – to design and implement the transformation of a vacant lot for public use.

The YEP teens meet 4 hours daily during the week with the goal to understand the issues surrounding abandoned urban vacant lots, to learn about art in public places, and to visit local salvage warehouses where unusual materials are available.

The teen’s work is a combination of facilitated dialogue, creative design, and hands-on work:
•	designing a logo for the Vacant Lot Project
•	drafting a plan for potential use of the lot
•	talking with neighbors about their ideas
•	establishing a working plan for lot transformation
•	physically building or finding ways to obtain necessary materials

Without current operating funds for this project, work is being done on a shoestring encouraging the teens to think “out of the box” about discarded materials that can be found, gathered and used…like tires, doors, or wrought iron railings.

Making a Difference
The Vacant Lot Project will make a difference in Albany New York – one lot at a time. Public interest is mounting as the teens are out in the community and as residents become engaged in the process. Interest and community engagement will continue to grow as the abandoned lot begins to change. Vacant lots can go from being an eyesore to a useful public space with a lot of hard work from organizations and individuals dedicated to making a difference.
